                  Straightforward Sustainability

                  Environmental, Social and Governance

                  Image

At iomart, sustainability is straightforward. We integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations across our business, combining good intentions with meaningful action.

We want to offer solutions to make our customers unstoppable, while looking after the environment and society around us. So we’re committed to helping our customers succeed in a reliable and responsible way. This is why sustainability is a core part of our operations.

                  Environmental

Most of our energy use comes from electricity (to power and cool our data centres). So we’ve reduced our emissions through partnerships, world-first technology, and compliance.

97% of our energy usage comes from our 13 data centres. So we’re setting ambitious carbon emission reduction goals with the aim of carbon neutrality.

                  Our environmental actions

We’ve partnered with Schneider Electric (a leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation) to source our power and change how we purchase energy.

All of our data centres are now powered by 100% renewable energy coming from sources like solar, wind, and hydro.

We’re continuously evaluating which sites have the largest carbon footprint to identify more opportunities to reduce our emissions.

In 2022 we developed a Carbon Roadmap with Schneider Electric to help us understand our Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, and set carbon reduction targets (using absolute targets or an intensity metric).

About 70% of all heat produced is wasted. Waste heat that could be turned into sustainable energy. That’s why we partnered with green start-up Katrick Technologies to develop a world-first heat cooling system.

Katrick’s patented technology is designed to turn waste heat into power that drives our servers’ essential cooling system.

In October 2021 Katrick installed this technology in our Glasgow data centre. Initial results showed a potential for up to a 50% reduction in electrical power consumption.

iomart and Katrick Technologies received the “Best Use of Emerging Technology” honour from the Digital City Awards in March 2022 for the significant impact our program could have on the carbon footprint of the data centre industry.

We comply with ISO50001 Energy Management to reduce energy use.

Our Compliance Manager audits and ensures adherence to these regulations to maintain high sustainability performance.

We make every attempt to prevent pollution by disposing of waste in an environmentally responsible way.

Where possible, we reuse and recycle materials, and consider environmental factors when purchasing products and services.

We’re replacing 10-year-old equipment with new technology and converting older light fixtures to LED in key data centres.

                  Social

With more than 400 employees we’re building a more diverse and inclusive environment with our values, partnerships and community outreach initiatives across the business.

We’re aiming for a technology-focused company, driven by purpose, with a genuine focus on wellbeing, diversity and equality.

                  Our our social actions

In 2022, we revamped our brand values to reflect iomart’s culture and aspirations. At the core of our five brand values is People First.

In 2020, iomart published our first Gender Pay Gap Report. While staff pay is not influenced by gender, and we promote equity and rewards irrespective of gender, we recognise the gender imbalance.

Since the initial gender pay gap report in 2020 we’ve increased diversity within commercial and operational teams and human resources, finance, and marketing functions.

We’ve expanded our benefits package to cover paternity, sick, and adoption leave, and enhanced maternity leave to 4 months’ full pay and then 4 months half pay.

We’ve introduced flexible work arrangements and changed core working hours from 10am-3pm to help families with childcare responsibilities.

We’ve also improved recruiting strategies to strengthen our diverse talent pipeline.

We continue efforts to narrow the gender pay gap imbalance and track progress to promote a more diverse and equitable workplace.

We collaborate with local charities that align with our values and operations, like those focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and women’s leadership advancement.

We’re involved with SmartSTEMs to encourage young people (ages 10-14) from underprivileged communities to learn about STEM careers.

We support Scotland’s Empowering Women to Lead Digital Transformation (EWLDT) leadership program, which nurtures future female talent in the technology industry.

We engage employees on community programs, so we know where to invest time and resources. Whether it’s through volunteering, financial donations, or equipment donations, we’re happy to help them give back.

We collaborate with an external organization, Business Volunteers, to identify local charities where we can make a meaningful impact.

We began hosting Volunteer Days at our Glasgow and Manchester sites in 2021.

Since 2021 we’ve cooked and served Christmas dinners to more than 70 vulnerable people in Manchester, volunteered at the Glasgow Community Garden Trust, and worked with FareShare UK to help deliver food that would prepare 40,000 meals for people in need.

                  Governance

We’re transparent about our sustainability progress while upholding sound systems and assurances to protect stakeholder interests.

As one of the largest providers of cloud computing, we’re committed to continually improving our governance processes and best practise.

                  Our governance actions

As a company listed on the London Stock Exchange for over two decades, we recognise and value investors’ increasing interest in ESG.

Our Board of Directors meets monthly to ensure shareholder interests and obligations are met.

In 2021, we added a fourth independent Non-Executive Director – bringing our Board to a total of seven members – to support the execution of our medium-term strategic plan, which will be key to our growth strategy.

We have appointed an independent, outsourced internal audit resource to support further our risk management framework and assurance programme.

iomart adopted the Quoted Companies Alliance (QCA) Corporate Governance Code, providing an outcome-oriented governance framework to support our business.

Cyber attacks have increased by 50% in 2021 compared to 2020. So to protect customer, employee, and business data, we continuously enhance our internal processes, security awareness, and training.
